College Majors
College Majors Dear high school seniors, when you sit in a cubicle for the next 50 years of your life for nine hours a day, what do you want to do? Think about it, and let yourself know in a few years. The earlier one can declare a major the better. However, it is very important for students not to pigeon-hole themselves into majors before college even starts. Choosing a major is one of the most important decisions students can make, and they need to choose carefully. After all, it very well could be what you do every day for the next 50 years. Carefully choosing a major does not entail typing Economics Jobs into Google or asking all of ones relatives about the different college majors. Students need to see and live their majors before hastily choosing one because its Monday morning and the communications market is supposedly growing. Students should enter college with an idea of what they want for in a career. It is important to have a major; however, when youre 18, trying to figure out which video game you will enjoy more for the next month can be a tough choice. Roughly 50% of college freshmen change their majors, according to MSNBC news. Therefore, freshman year of college is more about deciding a major than building repertoire within ones major. We recommend that freshmen engage in very diverse learning programs, participating in many different extra-curricular activities and classes. Students never know what could spark their interest in a specific major. Therefore, its important for them to keep an open mind. Students should get involved in different clubs and organizations and experience different classes to see what is out there. Who knows, maybe a certain professors chicken scratch on a chalkboard is more interesting to you than another professors. Also, colleges offer a lot of classes that high schools do not. Students should participate in these classes to learn something different. Freshman year is usually the only year in which students can have a broad learning experience. Once students get further along in their college programs, classes will become more specialized. Freshmen students have the rest of their lives to learn everything there is to know about one general field. That is why freshmen should learn a little bit about everything. Your college degree should represent what you love to do and what you do best. Its a decision that should not be taken lightly. Freshman year will help one decide exactly what that degree should be. Also, dont panic if youre done with your freshman year of college, and you do not have a major. There will always be time to find something you love. We encourage you to take that time.
11 Signs Youre Going to Rock Your Vocal Audition (in GIFs!)
11 Signs Youre Going to Rock Your Vocal Audition (in GIFs!) Suzy S. Even if youve picked out the perfect song to sing for your audition, its normal to feel nervous! But take a deep breath if youve got the below 11 things down pat, youre on the right track Auditions are a fact of life for a serious singer. After all, they are the job interview for the performer! If youre wondering how to prepare for a singing audition, Im here to help you with some important singing audition tips. Although auditions can seem daunting, there are plenty of things you can do to feel confident. Here are 11 signs that youâre going to rock your vocal audition! 1. You are rested. True, it may be harder in this day and age to get the suggested eight hours of sleep every night, but the more quality sleep you have the night before, the better! A relaxed body means better sound, as there will be a lot less tension. 2. Your materials are together. This means your sheet music is in the right key and clearly marked for the accompanist. The pages are also back-to-back and neatly organized in a binder. If youre using sound files, they should be easily accessible and cued up at the correct time. 3. You know your lyrics backwards and forwards! Confidence is key, and knowing that you REALLY have your songs down pat will help you soar through the audition! 4. Youâve done a good warm-up. This means at least 15 to 20 minutes or so of light vocal exercises. Itâs best not to do too much more than that, as you risk tiring yourself out. Think basic lip trills, hums, and sirens you can never go wrong with those! It doesnt needs to be anything fancy. 5. You are dressed appropriately. This means you look professional, but you are also not restricted in any way by clothing or shoes that are too tight, which can affect your breathing and overall comfort level. Remember a comfortable body means free tone! 6. Youâve picked songs that are right for your voice type. The tessitura of each song fits you like a glove. These songs are so worked into your voice that someone could wake you up at 3am to have you sing themâ" and youâd still sound good! Thatâs when you know you have the perfect audition songs for your voice. 7. The âcoast is clearâ meaning your throat and sinuses! Youâre free of congestion and excess phlegm. This means your vocal cords will come together nicely to make beautiful sounds. Problems with congestion? Please donât panic. Just do more lip trills and sirens! 8. Youâre hydrated. This is one of the most important singing audition tips to keep in mind. Thereâs nothing worse than the feeling of a dry throat when you have to sing! Just make sure you didnât over-hydrate, because that can dry out your vocal folds, too. One of my favorite things to suggest to singers is to cut an apple into quarters: this has the perfect ratio of water as well as citric acid to break up any light congestion. Its the perfect pre-audition snack! 9. You know what youâre singing about. Now this is a biggie! Singing the right notes, rhythms, and words is essential, but what good is all of that if you arenât connecting dramatically? Those that choose to be compelling over perfect are almost always those that get hired! 10. You realize that the audition starts before you begin singing. This means being kind and respectful to any audition monitors, stage managers, and definitely to your accompanist, should you be working with one! You never know who has the final say in whether or not you get hired or cast. Smile, be friendly, and be prompt! Being a diva will get you nowhere. And lastlyâ¦. 11. You are prepared to have FUN. Yes, I said it. Auditions can indeed be fun. You are going to rock any vocal audition you do if you treat it like an intimate performance, rather than something you have to do. With these singing audition tips, youll have an easier time dealing with the butterflies that try to creep up. If you are not already working with one, a voice teacher is also essential for preparing you for your auditions. There are so many great instructors with backgrounds in rock, pop, musical theatre, and more. He or she can help you find the songs that fit your voice, as well as coach you further in the essentials listed above! Break a leg! Remember that auditions do get easier the more often you do them⦠so get out there and show them what youâve got! Preparing for a contest or competition? Check our singing contest tips here! Ask Your Employer About Flex Work This is a great option if you are seeking new employment since you will probably already be aware of your current employerâs stance on working from home. There are many employers that make use of workforce management software that allows employees to work from home, at least some days of the week . You could take advantage of that opportunity and this will allow you to schedule your time around any family obligations within the daytime hours. You wouldnât miss the school concert, a teacher interview or a hot yoga class you have wanted to enrol in for some time. Important to note about flex work is that your employer may require you to be online at particular intervals; you may need to upgrade your home PC setup; you may take a pay cut, at least for any hours worked from home. 2. Get in Some âMeâ Time Everyone talks about how important âmeâ time is for people, especially busy Momâs but few women take this advice. Maybe you are having a hard time finding enough time to give yourself, or maybe you donât know what to do with yourself. Whatever the case, you need to make yourself a priority just as you do your partner and/or children. Donât get caught up in âwhat do I do?â First, schedule that âmeâ time right into your calendar. If you only have a 30-minute window free, give it to yourself. You donât have to write down what you are doing, or where you are going, just write âMEâ. When you get to your âmeâ time in the day, think of a hobby or interest you have. Even if you just go sip a coffee or tea for a half hour and read the paper, this time of just you will be beneficial. Some rules for âmeâ time are important to note: Canât be used for grocery shopping or shopping for anyone else but yourself Running errands is a no-no Daily living or hygiene routines do not count (i.e. shower, blow drying hair, going to the bathroom) Spouses or partners may not intrude upon this âmeâ timeâ"this would be called âtogether timeâ You cannot do any kind of workforce management during âmeâ time; i.e. no scheduling meetings, returning emails or answering phone calls. 3. Take Dinner Out in the Morning There is nothing worse than getting home from a long day at work and then being faced with the decision of what to make for dinner. It just adds stress to what was already a stressful day and we all make poor food choices if we are tired, unmotivated and overwhelmed. Plan ahead by heading to the freezer for your choice of meat or other entrée so that it can be fully thawed by dinner and you already have a clear idea of where you are going with dinner. This also helps if you are running late and someone else can jump in and start dinner for you. Better still is if you can get dinner started in the morning using a slow cooker. You will arrive home to a fully cooked, delicious smelling meal. However, this means you will need to get up earlier in the morning so if you are not a morning person, skip this. 4. Make it a Date! When I say date, I donât only mean with your spouse but also with your kids if you have any. Just as you scheduled in âmeâ time, be sure to physically schedule in a time for your family members. It can be weekly, not necessarily daily. For example, pencil in for two hours on Saturday morning a trip to the park and a little picnic with a snack. This gives you something to look forward to for you and the family. Bring no work distractions with you when you are having date time with the family. This date time also transcends to your spouse. It is very important to stay connected as a couple and make time to be alone. This could be going to bed an hour early and just talking or cuddling, watching your favorite TV show together for an hour or it could be a formal date to show and dinner. Whatever you choose, make it happen at least three times a week. 5. Ask for Help Asking for help is one of the hardest things to do for many women. It is often seen as a sign of weakness or neediness, but this is NOT true. In fact, the opposite! Asking for help shows that you understand your limitations and that you want to take charge of the situation before it gets unmanageable. Ask for help from your spouse/partner, your family and your friends. Donât be discouraged if they cannot help, just ask another person until you get the help you need. Just remember you are not alone. Balancing a career and home life is completely possible if you have the determination and understanding that each has its place in your life. Following these five tips will put you on the right track to workforce management along with enjoying important home time with your family. Problem Solving Skills for Students
Problem Solving Skills for Students Like life, school is a journey filled with twists and turns. Problems arise, but students who learn to confront them early will be happier and more resilient as they approach college and the real world. Here is a framework to help you build your students problem-solving skills: Start with identification. In assignments or projects, teach students to identify the task in front of them, then define the problem(s) theyre trying to solve. Articulate possible solutions. An important part of the problem-solving process is brainstorming solutionsas many options as possible. Weigh the options. Encourage your students to consider the ideas theyve come up with: what are the possible problems with each? Which alternatives are most and least feasible? Create an action plan. Before diving in, students should decide what theyll do first to work toward solving the problem. This should involve thinking through the strategy, steps and desired outcomes The execution phase is where your students should attempt to try out a solution by carrying out the steps that they defined in their action plan. To build on their learning, they should evaluate their progress as they go. Lastly, its time for evaluation. Encourage your students to reflect on their efforts, problem-solving process, what worked and what did not. They might decide to go back to the drawing board if the problem didnt get solved as planned. One of the best ways to prepare your students for college and the real world is to teach them how to identify and solve problems on their own. Regular practice doing so will help them be more confident and independent no matter what academic challenges they face. See how Huntington Learning Center can help your students succeed.
